What are No-See-Ums and should I be concerned?

No-see-ums, also known as sandflies or biting midges, are tiny insects commonly found in coastal areas like Sanibel Island. While they are small (almost invisible!), their bites can be itchy and irritating for some. No-see-ums are most active during early morning and late evening hours. If you’re outdoors during these times, we recommend using repellent. We offer an effective No-see-um repellent spray for purchase at the Front Desk if needed.

We recently installed an automated insect misting system in select outdoor areas of our property. The system uses a naturally-derived solution based on an extract from the chrysanthemum flower—to deter the presence of insects during their most active periods. We are pleased to offer it added layer of protection to help our guests enjoy their time outdoors in our most popular gathering spots.

What if there is bad weather or a hurricane?

Florida’s weather can be unpredictable, right up until an event happens. One of the most common sudden weather occurrences are our afternoon thunderstorms during the summer months. These showers can be brief, but can strike suddenly and present a danger to your safety if you do not seek cover. Follow this rule: if the time between the lightening flash and the rumble is less than 30 seconds, seek shelter immediately. Never stay in the water during a storm, nor use a tree as a shelter or stand next to a metal object. Consider the storm one of nature’s gifts…it gives you a chance to go shopping, stay a little longer in a restaurant, or just enjoy nature’s musical rain concert from your beautiful guest room.

During hurricane season, we continually monitor weather conditions to ensure that our guests and staff stay safe. The good thing about tropical storms and hurricanes is that they come with enough advance notice to allow us to prepare and take necessary action. Your safety is our first priority and we follow strict protocol to ensure that all guests are informed. In the event of severe weather, our city officials will determine whether a mandatory evacuation is necessary. In that case, we will work with each guest to coordinate a quick, safe and timely departure. The good thing is, many hurricane seasons pass without a single occurrence.
